David Schlachter Co-founder, lifelong learner

Abstract Chimp started with a simple question.

Why do our shoes shape us more than we shape them?

Growing up around footwear, it always felt strange that something so close to the body could feel so disconnected from it. Narrow toes. Elevated heels. Fashion over function. It was normal. But it never felt natural.

Discovering barefoot principles changed that. Wide toe box. Zero drop. Letting the foot do what it was designed to do. It wasn’t just about shoes. It was about remembering something basic.

Balance. Curiosity. Freedom of movement.

Abstract Chimp isn’t about rebellion. It’s about returning to what works. Designing products that respect the body instead of fighting it. Creating things that feel honest.

Walking away from the expected path made space for this. Leaving the script. Asking better questions. Building slowly. Learning publicly.

If there’s a message behind all of it, it’s simple:

When something feels off, explore.

When something feels rigid, soften it.

When something feels narrow, widen it.

We’re just making shoes that leave room for that.

Larsen Schlachter Co-founder, movement researcher

Larsen is driven by challenge.

Whether climbing, surfing, or learning something new, he’s always been curious about how growth happens through movement and discomfort.

What if shoes helped you move the way you’re meant to?

Barefoot principles made sense. Respect the foot. Remove what’s unnecessary. Let strength develop naturally.

The goal isn’t perfection.

It’s progress.

Try new things.

Walk your own path.

Start before you feel ready.
