How to Transition to Barefoot Shoes for Everyday Walking

Give your feet some time.

Curious about barefoot shoes? Start with a short, easy walk. Keep your familiar shoes around and gradually increase wear as your feet adjust.

You can explore a different way of moving without replacing everything in your closet.

Start with an ordinary moment

A walk around the block. A little time around the house. Something familiar, with an easy stopping point.

Your first outing should leave room to notice how the shoes feel. Check that your toes have space and your foot feels secure. Save the full day of sightseeing for later.

Let comfort guide the pace

Pay attention during the walk, later that day and the next morning. If everything feels comfortable, try a little longer next time. If discomfort develops, reduce your time in the shoes.

You can alternate between barefoot shoes and a familiar pair. There is no prize for making the switch all at once.

Research on minimalist footwear transitions has used varied approaches, with limited evidence for a single best protocol. Your starting point and the activity matter. A calendar alone cannot tell you whether you are ready for more. 1

Walking is a good place to begin

In an eight week study of 57 runners, gradually increasing walking in minimalist shoes improved measured foot muscle size and strength. A group doing foot strengthening exercises also improved. It is encouraging evidence that walking can be part of building foot capacity. 2

Running deserves its own progression. A separate study found more signs of bone stress among runners transitioning to minimalist shoes than among those continuing in their usual footwear. Feeling comfortable walking does not automatically mean you are ready to run the same distances. 3

You can keep the cushion

Our philosophy leaves room for different shoes, different activities and different days.

We value giving the foot opportunities to move and use its own capabilities. We also value comfort, protection and individual needs. Cushioning and heel elevation can have a place in that picture.

Room for the toes remains a firm priority in our everyday footwear.

Know when to ease back

Pain is a reason to pause or reduce use. Sharp, worsening or persistent pain deserves professional guidance. If you have an existing foot condition or reduced sensation, get individual advice before making the change.

Where Fission fits

It is one way to explore more room and flexibility in your day. How quickly you settle into it will be personal.

Take a short walk. See how you feel. Build from there.
